Craft X-Po Christmas Market
An annual Christmas craft market at the N.G. Kerk in Bellville, with over 220 stallholders chosen for handmade quality. The hall holds mostly handcrafted goods, with a few craft essentials and imported items alongside. As one of the first big markets to open, and running three weeks, it is where many shoppers get an early start on gifts.

An annual Christmas market on the grounds of Western Province Prep School, with over 80 vendors gathered in a large marquee. A lifestyle gift fair set inside the Baxter, Cape Town’s iconic Rondebosch theatre, which the fair fills beautifully across its foyers and spaces. An annual festive market in the Paarl Town Hall, with makers travelling in from as far as Thabazimbi, Bethlehem, George and Gauteng. Which kind of Christmas market?

Christmas markets in the Western Cape come in a few distinct shapes, and knowing which you’re after makes the choice easier.

The big gift fairs. Indoor, often running for two or three weeks, and usually in a school hall, civic centre or community venue. Some have 200 or more stallholders under one roof. This is where you do serious Christmas shopping: crafts, décor, gifts for everyone on the list, and a coffee stop to recover. Many use a central till, where you collect your items as you go and pay once at the end.

Kersmarks and feesmarks. Kersmark and feesmark are Afrikaans for Christmas market and festive market, and they’re a tradition in their own right, often run by a church or community, with home-baked treats, preserves, crafts and a tea garden. Smaller and warmer than the big fairs, and usually only on for a few days, so the dates matter.

Twilight and garden markets. Outdoor, often in the evening, under trees and fairy lights or on a wine estate. Less about the shopping list and more about the occasion: food, music and a festive evening out. These are the ones to watch the weather for.

Holiday-town markets. Along the West Coast, the Overberg and the Garden Route, December markets follow the holidaymakers. Some of these run right through the holidays and into January, which makes them the place for a last gift or something to spend a voucher on.

When to go

Late September to October is early, but the biggest fairs open then, and early in a fair’s run is when the stock is best. Makers sell out of their most popular pieces, and they don’t always restock before Christmas.

November is peak gift-fair season, with the most choice and the longest-running fairs in full swing. If you’re doing the bulk of your Christmas shopping, this is the month.

December has the most markets of all, including the twilight markets, the short-run kersmarks and the holiday-town markets. It’s the month for atmosphere, and for finding something for the people you forgot.

After Christmas a handful keep going into early January, mostly in the holiday towns.

Planning your market day

Check the days, not just the dates. A fair that runs for three weeks isn’t necessarily open every day of them. Many close on certain weekdays or keep shorter hours early in the week.

Go early on opening day for the best choice, or mid-week for a calmer browse.

Parking fills up. The popular fairs at schools and halls get busy on Saturdays, and parking is often on surrounding streets. Allow time.

Bring your own bags, and a sturdy one if you’re buying ceramics or anything breakable.

Cash is still handy. Most stalls take cards, but smaller traders at kersmarks and outdoor markets sometimes prefer cash, and signal can be patchy at rural venues.

Entry fees are usually small and often go to charity, particularly at church and school markets. Most are free.

Watch the weather for outdoor markets. Twilight and garden markets can be called off if the wind comes up. We post cancellations on our WhatsApp Channel as we hear about them.
