Lions Arts & Crafts Market has a new home

At long last, the Hout Bay Lions Arts & Craft Market has a permanent home.  In 2011 the market was given notice by council and informed that they could no longer operate in their original location (apparently, weekly markets must be held on a hard surface, which was not the case).  A number of alternative locations were put forward but proved unsuitable.
Given that the Market has been funding Lions’ projects for over 27 years (student bursaries, HIV and AIDS education, care of diabetic and elderly residents, support for local crèches and clinics and much more), as well as supporting local crafters, the loss of the market would have been great and a solution needed to be found.
Happily, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille intervened, and a new site below Kronendal School was put forward.  The Parks & Recreation Department and the Urban Design Department, with input from the Hout Bay Lions, worked together to create a beautiful site that doubles as urban recreational space.
The Lions have signed a 10-year lease and are planning an exciting new phase of the Lions Arts & Crafts Market in the years to come.  The first market in the new location will be held this coming Sunday (27 September 2015 | 10am-3pm), with a ‘grand re-opening’ in celebration of their new site being held some time in October (date to be confirmed).
