Now in its second incarnation, The Fringe, Cape Town’s design and innovation district, will host their monthly Fringe Handmade Market in Harrington Street with a wide variety of stands dedicated to products by local creatives.

Held for the first time in December last year, the February market will again showcase fresh designs from innovative talents, and is a joint initiative between The Fringe coordinating team, the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI), the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC), Woodheads and Fledge Creative Catalyst.

Check out the last market on You Tube: Fringe Handmade Market December 2011

This quintessentially Cape Town market is the perfect way to experience the Mother City’s creative network while shopping for edgy locally-produced items such as pottery, fashion, jewellery, homeware, accessories and more.

What distinguishes the Fringe from other popular weekly markets is its emphasis on original handmade products. It will be the perfect place to purchase a wide range of low to high end crafts and pottery, both decorative and practical, as well as fashion wear, beautiful handmade jewellery and accessories, proudly produced in South Africa.

This year’s Designer Maker Christmas Market starts this afternoon at the Freeworld Design Centre.

This combined event will take place from 14-16 December at the Freeworld Design Centre courtyard, along Cape Town’s Fan Walk. The church’s popular annual Carols by Candlelight is a non-denominational event that takes place within the church itself on the evening of 14 December.

Visitors to the market will be able to enter the church from the courtyard and all faiths are welcome to attend the carols. There is no cost to attend either the market or the carols. The market will run for a further two days after the opening carols event, and is in aid of the church’s children’s home.

Designer exhibitors are all hand-picked by Lauren Shantall (Head of Freeworld Design Centre). In addition to the exquisite handmade goodies on offer for festive season gifts, there will be live music, tours of the ELC Clock Tower, and a host of yummy food offerings. This event forms part of WalkCapeTown, a post-World Cup initiative, which aims to re-energise the Fan Walk through public events and ultimately enhance the cultural life of the city.

Over 80 designers will participate – view the list.

WHEN:

Friday 16 December 10h30 – 21h00 (public holiday)
